While surrounding a swimming pool with a wood deck looks great, it does require a lot of work to preserve and maintain the deck. And even with a good seasonal maintenance program of sealers or stains, most folks forget or neglect the underneath and in between of the boards in the deck causing unseen damage before it's too late.
Actually, with some of todays man-made and composite wood deck materials, there is no need in using real wood for landscaping decks around swimming pools. Yes, they are initially more expensive than natural wood. However, if you consider time and materials used to preserve natural wood decks, it's much cheaper in the long run.
