A Framework For Winter Interest
When designing your landscaping, you may want to keep in mind what your landscape will look like in Winter. This is actually a great planting scheme for Winter color and interest. It's also a good framework and starting point for what could be a very colorful landscaping scene. The repetition and placement of plants does create continuity and unity in the yard. However, I believe it lacks a little for the Summer landscape.
Again, as far as Winter interest goes, planting a framework or alike groups of evergreen type plants throughout the landscape will keep the landscape from ever looking lifeless in the off seasons. If a yard like this is also planted with groups of colorful annuals or perennials, it can look like two entirely different landscapes in different seasons.
