Hillside Front Yard Steps Planting

Ideas for planting beds that border steps and stairs on hillside front yards

Having planting beds and planter borders along the steps that go up front yard landscapes from the street to the front door not only look good but often have some functionality. This is also true for yards that are on flat ground but still may be especially true for sloped and hillside yards.

In yards where the lawn borders the sidewalk or driveway directly, there's always a chance of overspray and especially if you water on windy days. This can cause hard water calcium stains on steps, stairs, walls, sidewalks and driveways. And if the hardscaping is on a hillside, the problem can be doubled as the water collects and runs down the hill.

So creating border planting beds next to front yard steps and stairs that will create a buffer zone between the lawn and concrete will not only help stop hard water stains but will also eliminate run off while even providing some supplemental water to the planters that would otherwise be wasted.
